Hearing God

“Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy.” 1 Corinthians 14:1

I imagine a world where people simply listen to and align with God’s plans consistently and faithfully…and so I do what I can to encourage it!

Here are a few techniques I find fun and powerful! Invite me along on the ride if you want a leader/trainer and an extra set of ears.

This is a great way to create a safe environment to practice hearing God, receive confirmation based on similarities and differences, and learn God’s unique style of communicating with you. Plus, you get to ask Him specific questions about life and learn from Him.

Group Size: 3-4

Length of time: Approximately 15 minutes per person

Supplies: Paper and pen for each person (or computer but the typing can be distracting)

Preparation: It is helpful for each person to come with a brief, specific question they would like God to answer. If you aren’t sure, have someone else go and God will reveal your question along the way. Keep the questions simple and specific to start. For example:

  • I have this situation at home Lord, that is not resolving. Can you please reveal the root of the issue and what my part is in resolving it?
  • There are 2 opportunities at work and I would love your help deciding on which to pursue.
  • Someone is driving me crazy. Can you please show me something that will help me find unity with them or at least tolerate them better?

Details:

  • Pray
  • It is great to start with a bible verse. God often brings one to someone’s mind or highlights one during the week. If it isn’t clear, here are some great ones to share Proverbs 3:5-8, Psalm 16:11, 1 Chronicle 16:11.
  • For each person:
    • Share your question with the group.
    • The group asks clarifying questions but this isn’t a time for a lot of story. God already knows. We are just trying to get enough information to make it easier to get started.
    • Someone opens up listening to God with a brief prayer, repeating the question, and asking for His guidance.
    • Take 30 seconds to a minute to simply be quiet and listen/feel/experience what God is sharing. It may be words, a thought, a feel in your body that is not normally there, or something that occurs in the environment. This is a great time to play – don’t worry if you will hear Him or not! Simply be silent and let Him share what He wants to share, however He wants to share it.
    • When everyone is done writing, each person shares what they heard/experienced, including the person who asked the question.
      • If you are not sure if it is from you or God, simply mention this to the group.
      • If you don’t hear anything it is essential that you simply allow that to be okay. You really don’t want to make anything up!
      • Please, no advice. This is a time for God to speak. If you have experience in the question they are asking you can follow up with the person after the group and ask if they want you to share.
    • There is often a theme or similarities. If there ever seems to be a contradiction, go back to God and ask Him to share more…don’t assume one person is right and one is wrong. God may be trying to explain something that is multi-faceted.
    • If, after everyone shares, you feel that your answer was off, or it was your own words,  it can be good to share that with the group. Remember this is about learning – not being right.
    • Someone prays over the person based on what God shared.
  • Move on to the next person.
  • As soon as everyone has had a turn, pray and close the time together.

It’s a straightforward technique but is amazing when done consistently. It may take a few weeks to really warm up, so give it at least 4 weeks to try it out.

If you run into problems or something isn’t working – call, email, or set up a free 15-minute prayer / getting to know me meeting here. I am happy to help.

I am also available to lead/train and provide another set of ears, which can sometimes make it easier to relax into the technique and hear God. See “Services” toward the bottom of the home page for details.
